Job Description

Responsibilities:

The Weekend House Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the overall efficient operation of the Nursing Department during his/her shift. He/she serves in a consultant capacity to the Registered Nurse of each unit, helping to solve clinical/personnel problems as needed. Further responsibilities include serving as a bridge between nursing and other disciplines/departments in dealing with immediate situations and, in collaboration with the Referral Department, facilitating appropriate utilization of hospital services by physicians and patients. The House Supervisor fulfills first line call responsibility for nursing during his/her shift with the option to contact the Nurse Manager on-call for back up and the authority necessary to make decisions in the absence of the Director of Nursing. The Supervisor assists in providing direct care to patients as needed.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Current and active Registered Nurse licensed in the state of Alabama
  • Minimum of one year psychiatric/CD experience/mental health
  • Management experience preferred


DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Assists the unit nurse in problem solving efforts. Provides clinical back up on units as needed. Assists in scheduling and facilitating of breaks, lunches, etc.
  • Assures therapeutic and safe environment, patient rights, and the nursing process.
  • Staffs personnel to ensure proper coverage according to patient acuity and census. Utilizes overtime appropriately. Monitors FTEs based upon budget guidelines. Completes daily staffing report each shift; communicates appropriately with other supervisors and managers to assure budget guidelines are maintained.
  • Assists in the orientation, evaluation, supervision, and discipline of personnel under the direction of the DON and in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Assists Nurse Managers in counseling supervision, employment and discharge of staff; identifies problems of department concern and brings them to the attention of the Nurse Manager with potential suggestions and solutions to the issue(s). Provides documentation necessary for employee performance appraisals, supervisions, counseling, etc.
  • In collaboration with the Nurse Managers, he/she works directly with the new nurses to ensure adequate unit orientation.
  • Provides guidance to unit nurse in dealing with immediate personnel concerns.
  • In collaboration with the Nursing Management works to solve department problems; assists employees with personal goals related to their work performance as needed and as requested by the Nurse Manager.
  • Attends nursing department management meetings.
  • Participates in development of policies and procedures as requested and in chart audits as needed.
  • Performs light maintenance as needed, i.e., changes light bulbs, etc., and informs Maintenance of problems requiring their attention.
  • Directs activities in emergency situations including medical/psychiatric emergencies, fire, external and internal disasters according to existing policy, job descriptions, and in conjunction with administration.
  • Motivates staff to perform duties in an efficient and positive manner. Facilitates interaction between nursing and other disciplines/hospital departments on his/her shift.
  • Completes pre-admission assessments on walk-inn patients and potential admissions as needed; performs intake/assessment duties as designated and does so appropriately.
  • Serves as a liaison with physicians to ensure requests/concerns are handled in a satisfactory manner; maintains a good working relationship with all hospital staff. Interfaces with members of the community and facilitates transmission of information.
  • Views all sides of issues without bias. Communicates ideas clearly and displays good listening skills.
  • Demonstrates professional work ethics. Adheres to dress code.
  • Has a positive attitude toward Hospital departmental changes and new challenges; adheres to all hospital/departmental policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
