Job Description

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to perform manual work functions associated with the construction, maintenance and repair of water or wastewater facilities, systems, equipment and grounds.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs various manual work tasks associated with department operations, which may include pumping sludge, painting buildings and pipes, cleaning and painting plant equipment, changing oil in blowers, checking air packs, cleaning drying beds, washing windows, sweeping, mopping and waxing floors, disposing of trash, changing light bulbs, cutting grass and weeds, trimming shrubs and digging holes and trenches.
  • Assists with inspection and testing of machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs or replacements as appropriate; reports problem situations.
  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, including inspecting equipment, checking and replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts and cleaning equipment, shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; follows "lock-out, tag-out" and confined space safety procedures when working on equipment.
  • Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.

  • Ability to operate a variety of machinery, equipment and tools associated with plant operations, such as a dump truck, forklift, loader, front loader, tractor, mower, weedeater, drill, drill press, carpentry tools, painting tools, mechanic tools and hand tools.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.
  • Ability to exert heavy to extremely heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing 20-50 pounds; may occasionally involve objects and materials up to 100 pounds.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances.

Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license.
  • Six (6) to twelve (12) months experience involving mechanical and electrical repair and general building maintenance, is preferred but not required. Applicants with this experience may be given priority in hiring.
