The Surgical Service Tech is responsible for leading the daily and administrative functions in a Surgical Services setting with demonstrated expertise in surgical services. The position provides direction and leadership to ensure Specialty Surgical Center provides great patient care while improving the work life of staff and physicians. Principle responsibilities include oversight of daily OR operations by managing resources and creating an environment of staff accountability to deliver high-quality patient outcomes.

The Surgical Service Tech serves as a role model for promoting patient safety and compliance with quality improvement programs. This position reports to the Director of Nursing, and manages surgical schedules, staff schedules and organizational needs by employing effective communication and collaboration with staff, surgeons, anesthesia personnel, and other nursing and non-nursing leaders to provide optimal patient care and flow.

This position actively supports an aligned approach toward development and administration of surgical services policies, procedures and guidelines, and participates in system-wide problem solving, sharing of data and other collaborative efforts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Clinical Practice and Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Director of Nursing, plans for and provides a staffing pattern which meets the needs of patient care.
  • Coordinates ongoing in-service educational opportunities for technical/clinical OR staff.
  • Functions as a Surgical Technician in the O.R., as needed.
  • Assists in communicating department/leadership decisions and policies to staff and physicians.
  • Facilitates the flow of information from medical staff to clinical team regarding patient care procedures and new equipment.

Personnel Management

  • Assists in the recruiting of technical staff members who are in alignment with service excellence and quality patient care.
  • Engage in on-going feedback to the effectiveness of staff members in their roles.
  • Partner with the Director of Nursing to conduct annual staff reviews that foster mutual goal setting and feedback on performance.
  • Initiate appropriate remediation or investigation of employee concerns.
  • Facilitates orientation of all new staff and promotes ongoing continuing education.
  • Participates in the recruitment process, including interviewing and selection of staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Resource Management

  • Works effectively with Materials Manager, including utilization of materials and supplies.
  • Assists in making adjustments to staffing pattern.
  • Promotes cost-effective behavior in staff through observation and education.
  • Participates in the development of annual department goals and objectives.
  • Identifies and helps to resolve complex or recurring operational problems and consults with the Director of Nursing.

Basic Surgery Partners Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates Surgery Partners Code of Conduct as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current certifications for the position, as preferred.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, AAAHC, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare, to include knowledge of AAMI and AORN guidelines.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Two years of college, or Equivalent work related experience.
    Completion of Surgical Technician Program, Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Surgical Technician within Peri-operative Services, throughout multiple service lines.
  • Possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to practice as a Surgical Supervisor-Technician in a safe manner. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, Centers staff.
