Job Description


General Summary

The Nursing Supervisor is a Registered Nurse who is for the duration of a shift, with primary responsibility of maintaining standards established at the unit and divisional level by the nurse manager and director of Nursing, and with the authority to modify those standards if in the best interest of the hospital’s customers. The supervisor provides nursing administrative coverage in the absence of the directors of Nursing, and hospital administrative coverage in the absence of administration at a higher level. The supervisor has direct access to support service resources essential to nursing and patient care when the issue requires immediate attention.

Has delegated line authority for nursing associates for the duration of the shift for issues requiring immediate attention.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Nurse Manager.


Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing education program approved by the Board of Nursing or found by the Board to be substantially equivalent to the programs in Maryland.
  • BSN degree preferred.
  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in hospital nursing and proven administrative/leadership ability required.
  • BLS and ACLS required.

Working Conditions

Works inside. May be exposed to body fluids. Exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observation of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

Physical Requirements

Work is heavy. Requires close attention to many details. Standing, walking, and ascending/descending stairs is required 3-5 hours/day, 0-3 hours sitting, bending, lifting and reaching required up to and in excess of one hundred 100 pounds, in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Requires hearing and visual acuity 5-8 hours/day.
