Job Description

SHIP/SMP Specialist

Part-Time Contractual Position within the Department of Aging & Disabilities.

Pay Rate: $25/hour

Location: 2666 Riva Road, Suite 400, Annapolis MD 21401

Hours: 20 hours per week (Four (4) days a week, five (5) hours per day, with the ability to determine your one (1) day off)

Experience: 1-2 years in a Human Service related field.

Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree.

Due to Conflict of Interest: No one with an active license to sell health insurance would be a candidate.

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) are the local resources helping people understand their Medicare-related options.

The SHIP/SMP Specialist is responsible for activities supporting the programs by providing direct customer service to seniors, adults with disabilities, and their families and caregivers.

The SHIP/SMP Specialist is responsible for understanding the Federal and State rules/regulations as related to Medicare eligibility, Medicare enrollment, Medicare benefits (including Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D), Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Savings Programs, and Federal and State subsidy programs. The SHIP/SMP Specialist provides direct customer service to help people understand their Medicare options as defined by Federal and State rules and regulations.

The SHIP/SMP Specialist uses appropriate reporting tools to document counseling activities. The SHIP/SMP Specialist reports potential cases of Medicare fraud to the SHIP/SMP Director. The SHIP/SMP Specialist works with the SHIP/SMP Director on reporting Medicare cases requiring the attention of other agencies (e.g., Social Security, Department of Social Services).

The SHIP/SMP Specialist assists the SHIP/SMP Director with outreach to the community including public educational events (e.g., public speaking events and manning informational tables at community outreach events).

The SHIP/SMP Specialist is also responsible for supporting the efforts of the SHIP/SMP volunteer counselors by assisting with training of volunteers, assisting with the counseling efforts of volunteers and covering for volunteers when necessary.

Pay: $25.00 per hour
