School Athletic Head Coach

Salary: $1,103.16 - $4,412.63 Annually


Description

Under the general supervision of the school’s Athletic Director or Principal, the School Athletic Head Coach is allowed wide latitude to determine the best method to help athletes play their best individually, but more importantly, as a team in the various team sports. An employee in this class coaches, instructs, and works with student athletes to prepare them for competition. The School Athletic Head Coach is well-versed on the rules, strategies, and techniques of their sport, and also knowledgeable about sports equipment, physical fitness, and safety. The incumbent works as a casual labor employee according to the provisions of the contract compensated by a stipend at the end of the season.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Trains and prepares student athletes in pertinent sporting activity for competition.


  • Instructs and demonstrates the techniques necessary for individual, as well as team achievement.


  • Ensures that all members of coaching staff possess or obtain the required certification and training.


  • Ensures that appropriate rules and regulations are explained to all athletes, parents and/or guardians.


  • Ensures that all student-athletes are eligible academically, and also possesses the required medical insurance.


  • Ensures that the student-athlete is in good physical condition.


  • Enforces all policies related to discipline and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles.


  • Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of uniforms, equipment and supplies.


  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Physical Education or a related field and two (2) years of work experience working in sports or recreational activities.


    OR


  • An Associates of Arts degree from accredited institution a recognized college or university in physical education or a related field and four (4) years of work experience working in sports or recreation activities.


    OR


  • A High School diploma or its equivalent and six (6) years of work experience working in sports or recreation activities.

FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of all appropriate rules and regulations.


Knowledge of the fundamentals and advanced theories of the sport that the employee is coaching.

Knowledge of first aid, health & safety and how to deal with a distressed student-athlete.


Skill in leadership and team-building.

Skill in effective communication in order to inspire players and work with them on improvement.

Ability to actively participate in sporting activity.


Ability to maintain optimal physical health.


Ability to set an example for the players.


Ability to be self-motivated and resourceful.


Ability to accurately assess and appropriately address problems and threats.


FACTOR 2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Supervision is received from the Athletic Director or Principal of the school. Work progress is reviewed in the form of conferences, reports and evaluation of effectiveness of activities.


FACTOR 3- GUIDELINES


Guidelines consist of local applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to providing student services.


FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITY


Work is specialized recreational and sporting activity, which involves planning, organizing, supervising and participating in tournaments, sport leagues, summer camps and other outdoor activities for the benefit of the school’s community. The person in this position must be in good physical health. He/she must be physically oriented toward the active participation in sporting activity.


FACTOR 5- SCOPE AND EFFECT


The purpose of work is to coordinate, plan, organize and develop student-athletes into a cohesive unit that will participate in sporting activities for the benefit of all in the school community. It is also to stimulate development of younger student-athletes, whereby they can attain the highest level of proficiency in order to contribute positively toward the ultimate goal.


FACTOR 6- PERSONAL CONTACTS


Contacts are student athletes, supervisors, school personnel, various community organizations, business professionals, parents, and the general public.


FACTOR 7- PURPOSE OF CONTACTS


Contacts are made to gather information pertinent to the development of the athlete or the sporting activity. Contacts are made in person, by telephone, in writing and through other media services.

FACTOR 8- PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Work involves physical activity and fitness, as well traveling to sporting events and tournaments.


FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENT


Work is performed mostly in an athletic environment, as well as in an office setting.
