Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach Police Department proudly serves the residents and visitors of Virginia Beach by providing a safe community and improving the quality of life for all members and guests of our community. We are seeking to fill a position in our PHOTOSafe Red Light Enforcement Program, as well as the False Alarm Reduction Unit that will help support our mission.

Job duties include performing work supporting the PHOTOSafe Red Light Enforcement Program, as well as the False Alarm Reduction Unit, including reviewing/certifying PHOTOSafe (photo enforcement) violations, providing court testimony, maintaining related records and responding to citizen inquiries. As part of FARU, responsibilities include reviewing downloaded calls daily, and generating appropriate responses such as warning letters, fines, and notifications of non-registration.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.

Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.

Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Any combination of education (beyond high school) and experience equivalent to six years’ experience as a police officer, detective, investigator or related field which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; and successful completion of a police background investigation including polygraph examination.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be active or prior VDCJS Law Enforcement Certified, separated in good standing from a Virginia law enforcement agency within 60 months. Applicants from non-Virginia law enforcement agencies must have at least 3 years continuous law enforcement experience, and be out of law enforcement employment for less than 24 months.

DCJS certification requirements (including firearms) must be maintained for the duration of employment. Defensive tactics qualification will be waived from the DCJS certification requirements. Recertification through successful completion of in-service training or other training program (such as the auxiliary training academy) will be required within the first 120 days of employment.
VCIN/NCIC Level B certification must also be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferences:

  • Experience in traffic enforcement as a law enforcement professional
  • Current DCJS certification as a police officer.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Excel for reporting and tracking information.
  • Customer Service Experience

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
