Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The primary function of the District Basketball Coach is to plan, guide, and evaluate inter-scholastic athletic experiences designed to promote educational-based athletics. In addition, the District Basketball Coach is responsible for overseeing the entire athletic program for basketball and for supervising the activities of assistant coaches in the sport.


Job Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree recommended
  • License: Valid Indiana State Teacher’s License in Secondary Education preferred.


EXPERIENCE

Evidence of teaching ability and understanding of the needs of youth required.

Experience as a high school and college participant in the sport being coached preferred. Experience as a head basketball coach or in a comparable leadership/administrative capacity preferred.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Administers all aspects of the competitive program of basketball.
  • Instills education-based athletics daily.
  • Supervises the activities of the other assistant basketball coaches at the school.
  • Plans and implements the basketball program at the school.
  • Effectively communicates the objectives of the athletic program to other coaches and participants, parents, media, and community.
  • Motivates student-athletes to realize their greatest potential on the court, in the classroom, and in their daily lives (athletically and academically).
  • Knows and abides by IHSAA by-laws.
  • Collaborates with the student-athletes on achieving their collegiate goals.
  • Exercises good judgment and strategy with respect to gameplay.
  • Cooperates with coaches of other sports in the school.
  • Disciplines athletes when necessary.
  • Supervises the pre-season, in-season, and off-season conditioning and study-table programs.
  • Organizes practice plans effectively.
  • Ability to communicate plans to parents, coaches, and staff.
  • Effectively supervises the screening procedures for large squads.
  • Organizes game plans effectively, as well as drill plans, etc.
  • Takes responsibility for program equipment.
  • Exhibits sportsmanship and ethical behavior with students, coaches, officials, opponents, parents, etc.
  • Cooperates with morale-building groups, such as parent clubs, letterman clubs, etc.
  • Exhibits a vigorous, forceful, and inspiring personality.
  • Supervises and approves the eligibility of athletes.
  • Maintains professional relationships with all personnel connected with athletic events.
  • Follows procedures with press releases.
  • Assumes other duties or responsibilities as directed.
