Job Description
The Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic and detail oriented part-time Library Assistant II, who has a passion for public service, exemplary customer service and organizational skills to perform library/clerical work at any public service desk (Circulation, Adult Services, or Youth and Family Services (YFS)) but primarily in YFS in a busy area library.

YFS position responsibilities include assisting in the planning, conducting, and promoting in-house and outreach programs for youths and families. This includes storytime, STEM/STEAM programming, special events and providing homework help.

Ability to provide reader’s advisory services for children, ranging from pre-school to middle school age, teens, and parents.

Plans, prepares, and maintains library displays and conducts tours when requested.

Promote services and programs using approved social media websites.

Participate in CPL system-wide committees.

General public service desk responsibilities include: providing complex paraprofessional services at the public services desk using printed and electronic sources to assist with public computers, public access catalogs, copiers, faxes, A/V equipment, eReaders, and locating library materials.

Performs collection maintenance tasks such as holds, shelving and shelf reading, damaged materials and discards.

Prepares and maintains various reports and records.

Perform other related duties as assigned and assist at all service points as needed.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires one year of college in liberal arts or library science or any equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of six months related, full-time equivalent library or customer service experience. Six months’ public library experience preferred.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards depending on department.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Automated circulation systems highly desired.

Public library related experience desired.

Experience working with computers is highly desirable.

Comfortable with learning and demonstrating usage of computers,
Internet, library catalog, eReaders, eBoooks, research databases, e-mail, photocopiers, and fax machines.
