Job Description

Summary

We are seeking an easy going, flexible Kitchen Assistant/Steward for our Child Care Center who will be responsible for the cleanliness of the kitchen and basic maintenance of all equipment. They will wash the dishes, clean the kitchen equipment, floors and walls as well as handle the garbage. They will receive and put away food and supply orders and assist with food preparation as part of the kitchen team. The position requires heavy lifting and physical work.

Duties

Primary Responsibilities
  • Follow all ServSafe principles and state and local health requirements
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans and other supplies
  • Follow cleaning schedule
  • Keep all storerooms, employee bathroom, and storage areas clean and orderly
  • Take out all garbage, recycling and compost and ensure proper sorting. Clean garbage area and garbage cans
  • Clean and organize freezer and refrigerator on a regular basis
  • Check-in deliveries and put away food and supply orders
  • Assist with inventory of all food and supplies
  • Accurately maintain all required records
  • Attend all training sessions and staff meetings
  • Properly clean and close the kitchen each day
  • Assist with daily food preparation including hot and cold menu items
  • Fill in as cook
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Job Requirements, Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience in food service and sanitation preferred
  • Above average skills in maintaining confidentiality
  • Must be able to read, speak and write English fluently
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • Must be able to read packaging labels and instructions on cleaning products
  • ServSafe training or completed within 90 days of hire; responsible for keeping current

Physical Demands
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, bend, twist, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift, carry and relocate 50 lbs. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is moderate and may be loud at times due to use of equipment. This work is performed indoors and outdoors. The employee must be able to withstand extreme temperatures, hot and cold.
