Histology Assistant - Part-Time
Job Description
Under direct supervision of the certified histotechnician, performs general histological duties according to established procedures as well as preparation of histologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist. The Lab Histology Assistant is responsible for performing routine histopathological tests including processing tissue samples, microtomy, embedding, cryotomy, immunohistochemistry, and special staining procedures in preparing specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist.

Starting Wage: $17.79/hr, pay based on experience
Hours: Monday - Friday, 11am-4pm
Responsibilities
Accessions and arranges surgical specimens in proper grossing order for the pathologist and/or grossing tech., Accessions and arranges surgical specimens in proper grossing order for the pathologist and/or grossing tech., Analyzes and records data for quality control., Assists in the proficiency-testing program in the lab. , Cleans and maintains adequate laboratory supplies and work areas using proper cleaning procedures., Collects, labels, processes and preserves tissue specimens according to established laboratory procedures., Cut routine paraffin sections of surgical tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease., Evaluates sample adequacy and prepares cytology gyn-specimens, surgical, and cytology specimens for send out. , Examine slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements., Label, file, discard, and maintain tissue, slides and blocks per TJC and State of Illinois requirements., Maintains competencies and continuing education to keep informed of new developments in the field. , Monitors and manages the storage and disposal of surgical specimens. Discards the surgical and placental tissue, red-bag and body fluid wastes, observing safety standards. , Operates and troubleshoots computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by the pathologist. , Perform routine and special staining techniques on prepared slides for pathology evaluation., Performs administrative duties such as answering the phone, filing, and registering patients., Performs other duties as assigned., Perform various Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations and protocols.
