Position Title: Food Pantry Intake Specialist

Job Summary: This position is to help manage the daily grab n go pantry and the operation of food intake and storage at The Salvation Army Decatur.

Reports To: Social Services Director

Supervises: N/A

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others.

Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry.

Experience: Outgoing personality with excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse cultures are necessary. Strong organizational skills required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and the internet.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Skills:

  • Team player, self-starter, and perform well with minimal supervision.
  • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Must be able to workdays, evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary. Especially in emergent situations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Loading and unloading of van from grocery stores and food bank.
  • Sorting of food items, checking for expiration dates, discarding expired items.
  • Prepare freezer and refrigerator with necessary food for the day.
  • Check and record temperature of all freezers and refrigerators. Notifying manager if temperatures are off.
  • Maintain a clean and organized storage and pantry area.
  • Maintain flexibility to meet the daily changing needs of the food pantry.
  • Provide information on services available, gather information to determine eligibility, and assist clients with paperwork to access available resources.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner that fosters good relationships with program participants, coworkers and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: conflict resolution; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and program participants; respect of other's property and person; and communication to and about clients, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army's “Safe from Harm” Certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as related to food distribution.

Position Ranking:

  • Regular, Part Time, Non-Exempt

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

This Position is requires moderate physical activity. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to talk and listen, stand, walk, sit and use hands. Individual must be able to regularly lift up to 30 pounds and occassionally lift up to fifty pounds. The use of Office and Computer Equipment is necessary. Vision abilities will require close vision. Work may be performed indoors and occasionally require outdoors to attend meetings. There is moderate noise level for this position.
