The Emergency Department (ED) Associate performs a broad range of clerical duties related to providing patient centered care and plays an integral role in the ED throughput and patient satisfaction initiatives. As part of the ED healthcare team the ED Associate ensures that orders are carried out through collaboration with the ER provider and Registered Nurse. Excellent communication skills are paramount in this role.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors

2. Maintains confidentiality of patient information at all times.

3. Greets visitors, in person or by telephone; answering inquiries; relaying calls to patients; giving directions;
referring inquiries to nursing and physician staff.

4. Answers and places phone calls.

5. Responds to patient call bells and relays messages to appropriate staff member in a timely manner.

6. Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of all patient information (i.e., electronic, paper, verbal).

7. Responds to questions and requests within scope of position.

8. Maintains integrity of patient confidence and protects hospital operations by keeping information confidential.

9. Monitor department patient tracking board to ensure that metrics for throughput are maintained in collaboration
with nursing.

10. Departs patient in the EMR at the time of discharge from the unit

11. Demonstrates effective time management.

12. Maintain Rovers ad Biovigil inventory and ensures that they are charged and working as well as assigned to staff
for the shift.

13. Maintains unit supplies inventory (medical and office) by checking stock to determine inventory level and
communicating anticipated needed supplies; verifying receipt of supplies; storing of supplies.

14. Maintains a neat and clean environment at the nurse’s station.

15. Proficient use of HIS scanning technology for real-time uploads to the EMR.

16. Clerical oversight to ensure that all critical transfers out have appropriate paperwork and copies of pertinent
exams to transport with patients as well as evidence of sign EMTALA form.

17. Assures smooth clerical operation within the department.

18. Adheres to WPH policies and procedures including but not limited to Personal Appearance, Behavioral
Standards, Attendance and all Conditions of Employment).

19. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.

Previous work experience with some knowledge of clerical and hospital procedure preferred. Previous experience with computers and office machines.

Basic knowledge of computer programs applications

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment


  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may
be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the


hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.

  • Must be physically able to: perform manipulative arm-hand steadiness and hand-eye coordination skills including
use of computer keyboard and mouse; walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; able to lift and push heavy
objects and climb stairs as the ED is bi-level and requires cross coverage at any point during a shift.
  • Must have the ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption, attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a
time, and attend to multiple tasks at the same time while maintaining accuracy.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions. Individual must be able to understand and relate to theories
behind related concepts and remember multiple tasks given during course of day. Strong coping mechanisms
are essential for dealing with tragic events.
  • Must be able to detect objects closely and far away, and normal sounds (spoken and via telephone) with some
background noises.

Salary Range: $40,836.90-$61,255.16 (Ranges based on Full Time Hours)


Location: White Plains Hospital · Nursing - Observation
Schedule: Part Time, Evening, 9a-9p 8 shifts per schedule every other weekend and holidays
