The proposed programming at Free Geek Twin Cities will significantly benefit CTEP AmeriCorps target groups, including low-income youth, adults, seniors, new Americans, and BIPOC community members, by providing free, accessible technology education that addresses the digital divide. For low-income youth and adults, gaining digital literacy skills is essential for improving their employment prospects and increasing access to education and civic participation. Free Geek’s programming, focused on digital literacy and e-waste awareness, will equip participants with the skills necessary to succeed in the modern workforce, where digital proficiency is often a requirement. Seniors will benefit from tailored educational offerings that focus on basic technology skills, helping them stay connected to loved ones and access important resources like healthcare services. Providing this support is crucial for reducing social isolation and improving overall quality of life, as studies have shown that digital literacy improves seniors’ ability to remain independent. For new Americans and BIPOC communities, who often face additional barriers to technology access, Free Geek’s programming provides a pathway to economic mobility. By partnering with schools and leveraging volunteer expertise, the program will offer culturally responsive education that helps bridge the gap in technology skills for these underserved communities. This not only enhances their ability to access social and economic opportunities but also supports long-term empowerment through improved access to technology and digital literacy.
