Job Duties:

Community Service Officers (CSO's) are part-time civilian employees who play a key role in helping meet the mission of the Police Department by assisting Police Officers in a variety of non-enforcement roles and responsibilities.

Assisting at crash scenes by directing traffic and helping safely secure the scenes, eliminating or reducing the chance of other damage or injuries occurring. CSO's help citizens with disabled vehicles by changing their tires, fueling vehicles that run out of gas and jumpstarting cars. In addition, they may push disabled vehicles out of the roadway, call for tow trucks, assist with parking enforcement, and investigate abandoned vehicles, among other miscellaneous tasks.

Hours:

Core hours are Monday-Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (with some weekend hours). Community Service Officers are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week. Maximum weekly hours are 24 hours per week.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.

Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.

Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Preferences:

Strong customer service orientation; prior work experience serving the public; good familiarity with basic automotive mechanics (such as changing a tire); experience working in extreme weather conditions.

Special Instructions:

The selected candidates will begin their employment by participating in a 32-hour training program.

Must have U.S. citizenship or ten-year residency as a prerequisite.

Must also have successful completion of a police background investigation, including polygraph exam.
