The Fire Department is dedicated to protecting life and property through an all-hazards approach. This position will be filled as a Code Inspector I (G.20 $43,143.70 - $66,872.74) or a Code Inspector II ($47,565 - $73,727) based on qualifications.

Minimum Requirements:
Code Inspector I Minimums: High school or GED plus four (4) years experience in fields such as a firefighter, builder, building superintendent; or in the installation of fire protection equipment, or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must obtain a valid Virginia fire inspector certification issued by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and approved by the Department of Housing and Community Development within 18 months. Must attend the Virginia Building Code Core Academy within one year as identified in the Virginia Certification Standard (13 VAC 5-21-10 et seq.).
Code Inspector II Minimums: High school or GED plus five (5) years experience in fields such as a firefighter, builder, building superintendent; or in the installation of fire protection equipment, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid Virginia fire inspector certification issued by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and approved by the Department of Housing and Community Development. Must attend the Virginia Building Code Core Academy within one year as identified in the Virginia Certification Standard (13 VAC 5-21-10 et seq.).Must have valid driver’s license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.

The ideal candidate will have experience with the following:
Experience inspecting commercial properties
Experience with fire code permits
Knowledge of residential & commercial site and construction plans and/or surveys
Working knowledge/experience with summons and warrants
Experience working in confined spaces
Special Instructions:
VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
