Job Description

Position Summary:

The Everest Ambulatory Surgery Center Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) is primarily responsible for providing professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices. The Everest Surgical Institute Operating Room RN assists physicians and staff in coordinating patient care within the surgery center and functions as the primary liaison between patients, caregivers, staff, anesthesia, and physicians.

Essential Job Duties

General:

· Maintains confidentiality in all clinical activities and communication.

· Coordinate and manage the multidisciplinary activities required to provide a safe environment for patients undergoing surgical intervention.

· Evaluates, observes, and assists with treatment of patients under anesthesia.

· Maintains knowledge of cardiac monitors and cardiac arrhythmias.

· Assists in safe transportation and positioning of patients.

· Restocks, maintains accurate inventory, and orders supplies internally.

· Restocks and accurately inventories medications, including drug samples.

· Maintains up-to-date sample cabinet, ensuring all expired medications are disposed of per clinic policies.

· Dispenses medications as directed by physicians.

· Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with physicians, patients, families, visitors, and co-workers.

· Communicates effectively and professionally with co-workers, medical staff, and ancillary departments for continuity of patient care.

· Completes all required charting and documentation according to clinic guidelines and the direction of the physician.

· Maintains working knowledge of emergency equipment (location and use) and assists with safety drills as well as actual emergency situations.

· Recognizes and acts on potentially unsafe acts and conditions.

Pre-Operative:

· Documents with accuracy, all care given to patient on the patient medical record. Checks medical record to assure all preoperative test results, history and physical and surgical consent are on chart.

· Assesses patient condition upon arrival to pre-op and provides physical or emotional support as needed.

· Serve as patient advocate during the intraoperative period.

Operative:

· Monitors the operative schedule to ensure patients will have a timely and safe course of treatment.

· Prepares procedure rooms for patients by assembling supplies, instruments, and equipment.

· Checks equipment for proper functionality.

· Monitors the cleanliness of procedure rooms.

· Anticipates physicians’ needs during procedures, maintains constant awareness of the operative situation, and provides extra supplies as needed.

· Accompanies patient to PACU, provides report of patient’s surgical intervention and preoperative notes.

Additional Job Duties:

· Minimizes risk of nosocomial infection by adhering to infection control policies and practice guidelines.

· Provides ongoing patient education and acts as an advocate for patient needs with physicians and other available social and medical services.

· Completes necessary forms according to center policies and procedures to ensure services are completed according to coding and billing guidelines.

· Maintains flexibility to work throughout the surgery center.

· Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

· Adapts to change in a positive and professional manner.

· Enhances professional growth and development through meetings, education, conferences, etc.

· Attends employee meetings and in-services as required by the Nurse Manager.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Must have a minimum of the following qualifications:

· RN degree from an accredited school.

· Current license issued by the Idaho State Board of Nursing.

· ACLS, PALS certification, or ability to obtain, required.

· Certified in first aid and CPR.

· Two years professional nursing experience, surgery center experience is preferred.

· Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations, and practices to give and evaluate patient care.

· Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.

· Skill in collecting data by interview, observation, auscultation, and palpation.

· Skill in organizing and reporting data that is accurate, complete, and accessible to other health care team members.

· Must be responsible and accountable for his/her medical judgments, actions, and competence.

· Ability to learn and retain information and procedures.

· Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.

· Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

· Excellent communication skills and display professional appearance.

· Proficient in the use of office equipment (phones, computers, and paging system)

ADA Requirements:

· Frequent mobility and/or standing for extended periods of time.

· Manual dexterity for taking and recording patient vitals and assisting physician.

· Bending, stooping, and pushing required.

· Lifting and transporting patients required.

· Occasional stress from dealing directly with patients and working in a busy surgery center setting.

· Physically capable of listening.

· Physically capable of reading and reviewing written communications.

Job Types: Part-time, PRN

Pay: $38.00 - $44.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week
