Job Description

Position Overview:

We are excited to welcome a passionate and dedicated Dog Trainer to our dynamic team at Good Dog, DYNO. This role offers a unique opportunity to work in various training environments, including in-home sessions, our innovative Barks & Rec. program, and group classes at our .

The Associate Trainer will initially work under the guidance of our experienced Barks & Rec. trainers, gaining valuable hands-on experience and insights into our socialization and play-based training methods. After a comprehensive training period, you will be entrusted with your own Barks & Rec. class. Additionally, you will shadow our Chief Training Officer during in-home training sessions and group classes, progressively taking on your own clients as you become proficient.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Training Sessions: Conduct in-home training sessions, group classes, and Barks & Rec. sessions, ensuring effective implementation of training techniques and methodologies.
  • Assist in Program Execution: Work closely with Barks & Rec. trainers to facilitate and manage dog play and training sessions, ensuring a safe and positive environment for all participating dogs.
  • Supervise Dog Interaction: Monitor and guide dogs' interactions, helping to manage their play styles and behaviors to promote positive socialization.
  • Client Communication: Engage with dog owners to provide updates on their pets' progress, offer training tips, and address any concerns or questions.
  • Training Reinforcement: During sessions, reinforce basic obedience cues and advanced training skills to enhance the dogs' learning experiences.
  • Maintain Facility Cleanliness: Assist in maintaining a clean and organized training and play area, including cleaning up after dogs and ensuring the space is safe and sanitary.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of training sessions, behavior observations, attendance, and any necessary documentation.
  • Collaborate with Team: Work collaboratively with the training team to develop and improve training programs, share insights, and contribute to the overall success of the training initiatives.
  • Ongoing Education: Participate in continuous education opportunities and professional development to stay current with the latest training techniques and industry best practices.
  • Support Training Events: Assist in organizing and conducting training workshops, Barks & Rec. evaluations, seminars, and special events to educate clients and promote positive reinforcement training methods.

Qualifications:

Passion and Expertise:

  • A deep passion for and understanding of dog behavior, training, and socialization.
  • CPDT-KA certification is highly desired. We also value other certifications such as IAABC, ABC-DT, and ABI-DT. Applicants actively seeking certification are encouraged to apply.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in a dog-related role, such as dog daycare, training classes, or similar settings, is required.

Basic Skills:

  • Ability to write competently and perform basic arithmetic.

Team Collaboration:

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, taking direction from trainers and collaborating with fellow staff members.

Communication and Customer Service:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to engage with clients, provide updates, and address their concerns professionally.

Attitude and Willingness to Learn:

  • An enthusiastic and positive attitude with a genuine willingness to learn and grow within the role.
  • Eagerness to participate in continuous education and professional development.

Handling and Safety:

  • Comfort and confidence in handling dogs of various breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols to ensure the well-being of both dogs and handlers.

Flexibility and Physical Stamina:

  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and engage in active training and play with dogs for extended periods.

Technology and Record Keeping:

  • Proficiency in using technology for maintaining accurate records of training sessions, behavior observations, and client communications.

Commitment to Positive Reinforcement:

  • A solid commitment to using positive reinforcement techniques and avoiding aversive methods in all training practices.

Bilingual Skills:

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a huge plus, but not required.

Goals:

  • Gain a deep understanding of Canine Learning Theory and its practical applications in dog training.
  • Develop proficiency in teaching and reinforcing basic obedience cues to dogs in a training setting.
  • Learn effective problem-solving techniques and how to create behavior modification plans for dogs with various behavioral challenges.
  • Familiarize yourself with the terminology used in dog training and develop the ability to write detailed training plans.
  • Understand the importance of positive reinforcement-based training methods and the LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) approach.
  • Enhance observational skills by shadowing experienced trainers during group classes and understanding dog behavior cues.
  • Improve communication and teamwork abilities by actively participating in problem-solving discussions with senior trainers.
  • Learn the importance of maintaining a clean and safe training environment, following PACFA standards for canine health and disease prevention.
