Who We Are

The Depart me nt of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University researches the physical processes that influence and determine our climate as well as providing insight into how and why the climate changes. This is an enormous topic and covers spatial scales from atmospheric chemistry, aerosol particles, air pollution, cloud particles, with radii of microns, to large-scale atmospheric waves, with length scales of thousands of kilo me t e rs. Topics studied in the depart me nt include the physics of convection, climate variability, feedback physics, climate sensitivity, climate extre me s, and regional modeling . Variability and predictability of climate on seasonal to millennial ti me scales, coupled ocean-atmosphere interaction, large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans.

What We Want

The Assistant Research Scientist will require a high level of scientific skill and broad scope of functionality. The scientist will collaborate with the Tropical Systems research group in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences by supporting the analysis of mesoscale convective weather systems using an open-source tracking tool. The scientist will also carry out further development of the tracking tool and provide coding support for computation and visualization needs of the research group, while helping mentor students and postdocs. Additional responsibilities will include contributing to the writing and publication of scientific papers and grant proposals. What You Need to Know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Please note: A ll or a portion of this positions salary may be funded by grants or contracts, continuing salary and overall employment is contingent upon the continued availability of these funds.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or related fields

  • Minimum of one year of postdoctoral experience in scientific computing

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill with Fortran and Python programming

  • Experience with running atmospheric models and visualizing their output

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience in managing big datasets

  • Strong mentoring skills to work with students

  • Ability to contribute to writing proposals to secure external grant funding

Responsibilities:

  • Scientific analysis, data management and visualization : Performs post-processing and visualization of data. Performs “Big data Management” for observational datasets and model output. Utilizes an open-source tracking tool to support the analysis of mesoscale convective weather systems.

  • Software maintenance and development : Engages in software development. Performs continuous development of tracking tool. Provides coding support for the computational needs of the research group.

  • Mentoring : Co-mentoring and advising students and postdocs in the research group.

  • Writing and publishing: Assisting research group with publishing scientific papers and external funding
