Supervisor: Shelter Manager

General Description:

The Animal Care Attendant is responsible for assuring that all adoption center animals are treated with care and compassion while maintaining a safe, secure and sanitized facility and outdoor exercise area. Animal Care Attendants are expected to practice proper hygiene when handling multiple animals and to use cleaning equipment properly adhering to health and safety standards.

Animal Care:

  • Complies with all health care policies as outlined in the Internal Operations Policy manual approved by a licensed Veterinarian and the HSNWMT Board of Directors
  • Provides adoption center animals with adequate food, water, exercise, and mental stimulation
  • Dispenses medications and provides recommended follow-up medical care as prescribed by a licensed Veterinarian
  • Observes and documents daily (in writing) any unusual animal behaviors or physical abnormalities such as changes in eating habits, water intake, urine or stool (consistency/frequency of elimination), sleeping patterns, scratching, sneezing, wheezing, head shaking, constant licking, self-mutilation, limping, hair loss, bad breath, lethargy or signs of bleeding.
  • Provides bathing, grooming and nail trims for animals, as needed
  • Provides training to volunteers, as requested
  • Provides a friendly helpful attitude to all visitors and maintains up-to-date knowledge of all animals
  • Transports animals to and from veterinary appointments, if needed

General Care:

  • Cleans and sanitizes cat and dog cages in kennel areas (inside and outside) and side rooms
  • Cleans and sanitizes food and water bowls, toys, bedding and laundry
  • Cleans and sanitizes hallway and side room floors
  • Cleans and sanitizes walls, doors, sinks, counters, mops and mop buckets, and cleaning equipment
  • Cleans and sanitizes portable crates, carriers and cat furniture
  • Empty, clean and sanitize waste baskets and poop collection cans
  • Cleans the outdoor pet park area and checks for needed fence/gate repairs; provides fresh water, scoops poop and removes frayed toys
  • Restocks food carts daily; foods, cat litter, paper towels, spray bottles and bedding, etc.
  • Notifies the Shelter Manager or ShelterMedical Coordinator of any animal care or general care supply needs
  • Notifies the Shelter Manager of any malfunctioning equipment or needed repairs that are noticed inside or outside of the building, on the property, in the Pet Park or with any company vehicles

Work Environment:

· Potential for exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, hazardous chemicals or chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets, sharp objects and potential hostile persons and/or dangerous and fractious animals.

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to stay standing or active during entire shift

· Ability to lift and carry objects and animals of moderate weight

· Ability to lift, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, push and other strenuous activities

Work Hours:

  • The work hours for this position include weekends and holidays. The care of adoption center animals is a 365-day operation.
  • Work hours are Tuesday-Friday from 11am-5pm, and Sunday from 8am-5pm

Additional:

· Adheres to the policies, procedures and guidelines outlined in the HSNWMT Policies and Procedures Manual.

· Follows all established procedures and protocols for the safety and well-being of the animals and all those caring for the animals, and for the smooth operation of the adoption center.

· Works cooperatively with all staff members and volunteers at all times.

· Maintains courteous, kind and professional manner in interacting with members of the public, board members and volunteers of the organization, coworkers, supervisors, and supervisees.

· Responds to the immediate needs of the organization and will from time to time be asked to perform tasks outside those requirements specifically addressed in this job description, including answering phones & conducting adoptions.

· Performs other tasks as assigned by the Shelter Manager or Executive Director.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32 per week

Work Location: In person
