POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Afterschool Program Staff at Penobscot Bay YMCA provides a safe, nurturing and positive environment for children and parents in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide an emotionally and physically safe environment for all participants.
  • Help to develop and implement a high quality After School Program that incorporates both physical activity and enrichment activities. Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and staff.
  • Complies with all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards. Cares for facilities and equipment ensuring materials and furniture are neatly put away at the end of each day.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Assists with Vacation Camp and Snow Camp programs when the Afterschool Program is not in session.
  • Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 16 years of age (The age minimum may be higher depending on state law and YMCA policies.)
  • Previous experience working with children preferred
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.

  • Physically perform all skills required of Afterschool Program Staff
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  • Control unsafe behavior as necessary.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds multiple times each day.
  • Frequent twisting, bending and kneeling.
  • Exposure to the outdoor environment during all seasons.
  • Be able to see and hear well enough to respond to classroom needs.
